What is the difference between Inserts & Direct Vents?

Inserts are used for applications where you have an existing masonry fireplace now. The insert sits inside this and a liner is installed and connected to it through your chimney for venting of flue gases. Direct Vents can be installed in any room regardless of weather you have an existing fireplace or not. 100% of the combustion air used by the fireplace comes from outside the home.

How do I light my pilot?

First of all, make sure your gas fireplace has a standing pilot system. (Some units use electronic ignition and have no pilot light for operation.) Each gas fireplace includes a metal plate behind the bottom grille of the unit, which contains detailed instructions on lighting the pilot of your fireplace. This information is also contained in the installation and owner's manual, which shipped with your fireplace. If none of these information sources are available to you, please call Applewood Ltd.

Can I adjust my flames?

Open the lower grill of your fireplace and locate the main gas valve. If the valve has a silver dial on the front with "High - Low" markings on it, rotating the dial while the unit is operating will adjust your flames up or down. Also, for maximum convenience and enjoyment, your dealer can show you an optional remote control which will control many functions of your fireplace including flame height from the comfort of your favorite chair!

Can a blower be added to my fireplace, gas or wood?

Blowers are optional on most heat circulating (grilles on top and bottom) fireplaces. This is easily accomplished providing that power (110v AC) was provided to the electrical junction box of the fireplace at the time of initial installation. If power was not provided, a fan option is still possible, but the installation is more complicated and therefore more costly.

If I now use a wall switch to turn my gas fireplace on/off, can I still use a remote control at a later date?

Yes. It is recommended that you disconnect your wall switch wires from the main gas valve and connect only the lead wires for the remote control receiver to avoid any operational problems.

Can I position the logs in a different fashion?

No. The logs and burner of your fireplace are designed to operate at maximum efficiency. To accomplish this, the logs have been placed in exact locations in relation to the flame pattern. If you move the logs, or place them in the wrong location, it could result in the fireplace "sooting", which would cause a black film to develop on the logs and glass front of your fireplace. If you are currently experiencing sooting on your fireplace, it is likely the logs are installed improperly and you should contact your Heat-N-Glo dealer for assistance.

What is the difference between ceramic logs, fiber logs and camp fire logs?

There are basically three types of logs available in the marketplace: Cement logs are made from a concrete refractory mix. Ceramic logs are also a heavy cement-like material which has been kiln fired prior to painting. Both of these types of logs produce no glow, and in fact, "soot up" when in direct contact with flames. The third and preferable log type is fiber. This material is much lighter and provides the realistic glow that homeowners believe look like a real wood fire. Camp fire logs refers to the natural, random look placement of logs which is unique to Heat-N-Glo fireplaces.

Can I use a different set of logs in the fireplace than the ones that come with the fireplace?

Some Heat-N-Glo models do have optional log looks available. In fact, some homeowners have two log sets for their fireplace and rotate them from one winter to the next to vary the look.

Who can install my fireplace?

It is highly recommended that you use only Authorized Heat-N-Glo Suppliers to install your fireplace. An improperly installed fireplace is a potential fire hazard. In addition, you run the added risk of possibly voiding your homeowner's insurance and your warranty if installed improperly.

What is the cost to operate my gas fireplace?

This varies by region, by gas utility and by fuel type. Based on national averages, a gas fireplace consuming 27,000 BTUs per hour will cost from 12-15 cents/hour to operate. LP units are slightly higher to operate. Your monthly gas bill should include your exact cost per therm (100,000 BTUs). Based on this rate, and the BTU input listed on the rating plate on your fireplace, you can calculate the cost for your area.

I have an existing wood fireplace, but I'm tired of hauling ashes, how does a gas insert for my fireplace work?

Your existing wood fireplace, along with being messy, is probably not very efficient. This is because of the amount of room air being drawn up the chimney when your damper is open. As the name implies, a gas inset fits inside your existing fireplace and completely seals off the front of your fireplace by using various sized surrounds that fit tightly to your fireplace opening. The insert has a fixed glass front which also keeps air from escaping up your chimney. Heat-N-Glo gas inserts use 3" diameter flexible liners that run inside your existing wood chimney to vent the gases when you're using your insert. This is an important feature since older masonry fireplace chimneys can lose their ability to properly vent due to improper maintenance. A gas insert makes your inefficient wood burning fireplace into a hassle-free, clean burning, efficient gas fireplace.

When the electricity goes off, will my gas fireplace still work? And will the blower work?

As long as your gas fireplace has a standing pilot ignition system, it will still operate during a power outage. (Electronic ignition fireplaces will not operate without electricity.) Since the fan requires 110V ac to function, it will not be operable in an outage. NOTE: If you have a remote control on your fireplace, you most likely will need to turn your fireplace on manually during a power outage. This is done by locating the ON/OFF rocker switch located behind the lower grille of your fireplace, and turning it to the ON position.

I understand gas direct vent fireplaces are very efficient, but I don't really want that much heat. Do I have any options?

Absolutely. Too much heat can sometimes be an issue even in colder climates. Heat-N-Glo has several gas fireplace models which allow you to control the amount of heat coming into the room. These units have a simple control which sends more or less heat out the venting system. In addition, we have just recently introduced two unique heat management options: Heat Out and Heat Zone. Heat out lets you send yp to 70% of the heat from your fireplace outside the home. Heat Zone allows you to take vent excess heat from your fireplace to other rooms in your home. Both of these options are oriented to new construction or remodeling installations, your Heat-N-Glo Supplier can provide you with more detailed information on these options.
